Customization of Your solar Filter
For exact size, mention the Outside Diameter (O.D.) of the Optical Tube of your Telescope or Binoculars or Camera etc. Remember Inner Diameter (I.D.) of the Solar Filter would be equal to Outside Diameter (O.D.) of the Optical Tube
O.D. of the Tube = I.D. of the Solar Filter

Thousand Oaks Silver-Black Polymer film sheets are a great way to make custom solar filters for Telescopes, binoculars and cameras with low to moderate magnification. The sheets are CE and ISO certified.
Thousand Oaks Silver Black solar polymer film is an exclusive material developed for safe solar observing and is fully CE & ISO certified. Specialized solar film is designed to block out nearly all visible light and all harmful UV light to protect your eyes and keep temperatures low for optical instruments. Unlike Mylar, commonly found in food packages which is both not as safe as polymer due to commonly exhibiting pinholes and produces a blurred image, Thousand Oaks Silver-Black Polymer produce a sharp and clear yellow-orange colored view of the Sun. Contrary to other films, black polymer solar film is protective throughout the film substrate as well so there is no concern of safety failure during use or storage. Film sheets are a great way to make homemade custom filters for telescopes, binoculars and cameras with moderate to low magnification.
Silver-Black Polymer Films are completely safe for unlimited visual and photographic (16 f/stop reduction) use when used as instructed. Our filters also protect the camera sensor. Safe to view through the viewfinder with SLR’s that focus through the lens.
Solar filter MUST be first in line from sun and in front of any telescope or camera lens or mirror. Filter should NEVER be used behind any lens, eyepiece or finder. This includes camera drop in holders behind lens.

Some common questions
- Can the telescope optics get hot or damaged?
No, all the heat and intense light is blocked before it can enter the telescope. Your telescope may get warm from sunlight shining on it, not from the small amount of visible light transmitted through the filter. - What detail is visible?
Sunspots and surface granulation are the two main features. Solar image with Silver-Black Polymer film is yellow-orange. The only detail that cannot be seen with a standard filter (commonly called white light filter) are prominence and flares which require our highly-specialized H-alpha Filter System.
IMPORTANT NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS
- Check the solar filter for damage before each use.
- The filter must be FIRST in-line between sun and instrument. Do not use filter behind any lens.
- Truss design telescopes must NOT be used without covering the open section of tube. Sunlight entering from the side will reflect off mirror and damage the solar filter.
- Secure filter properly
- Do not leave instrument unattended where a child or inexperienced adult could point it at the sun without the filter properly attached.
- Keep the finder-scope covered if not equipped with a proper solar filter.
- Point the instrument away from sun when attaching and removing solar filter.
- Do not place the filter up against a smaller instrument. The end of the tube will damage the filter.
- When looking through the focusing tube without an eyepiece, there may appear to be small defects in the coating that are not seen when observing through the eyepiece. This is normal and is not a coating defect or safety concern.
- Filter may absorb solar energy and get hot during use. Use extra care when removing.
CLEANING
- Loose dust can be blown off with up to 15 PSI. Clean with Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and a soft tissue. Do not use a cloth. It’s best to mist the filter with a spray versus soaking the tissue. Use a 3 inch or larger circular wad of tissue and
lightly rub across surface using long strokes. Lightly wipe dry with a fresh dry tissue. Polymer is more susceptible to small surface scratches, so extra care should be taken. Surface scratches will not compromise the safety.
WARRANTY
- Silver-Black Polymer 10 years. All filters are covered by a limited liability warranty from defects in material and workmanship. This warranty does not apply if in the judgment of Thousand Oaks Optical, the product fails to be safe due to shipping damage, damage from improper handling or storage, abuse or misuse, or has been used or maintained in a manner not conforming to product’s instructions or has been modified in any way.
